The dashiki originated as a man's shirt, although is worn as a unisex garment here in the United States and elsewhere. In fact, the word itself means "man's shirt" in Nigeria. A generously tailored top that is suited to tropical climates, is easy to make and can express ethnic solidarity. It can be made of any fabric, but a light weight, bright colored fabric is generally favored. African fabrics are readily available such as kente and mudcloth. Batik is also a popular choice.
